HashRDG

Sandi Thom has a very poor grasp on reality.

Look at some of the lyrics of her song, I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker:

“When the head of state didn’t play guitar”, our head of state is the queen, and I don know if she plays guitar or not.

“Not everybody drove a car” I don’t drive a car and nor do lots of people I know.

“And the only way to stay in touch was a letter in the mail”, really, that was the only way, in 77, was it?

“And the super info highway was still drifting out in space” ok, this one really baffles me.  Does she think that the internet floated to earth from space?  Bizarre.

“Kids were wearing hand me downs” I cant say with certainty, but I bet they still do now.

“And footballers still had long hair and dirt across their face” now they have long *and* wear effeminate Alice bands.

Humph.

The Police can’t tell you to take your England shirt off. Stop forwarding this nonsense. #rdg

With the world cup coming up the usual daily mail reading “political correctness gone made” peoples of the UK have started forwarding emails and setting as their statuses on Facebook to chain letter style paragraphs that look a lot like this:

POLICE R GOING AROUND PUBS AND CLUBS SAYING THAT WE CNT WEAR OUR ENGLAND TOPS 4 THE FOOTIE & GTA TAKE THE FLAGS DOWN AS IT IS UPSETTING THE PEOPLE THAT DONT COME FROM HERE!! NO IM NOT RACIST,BUTTHIS IS TAKING THE PISS! THIS IS OUR COUNTRY AND WE NEED 2 MAKE A STAND IF THEY DNT LIKE IT GO AWAY WOULD YOU..REMOVE UR TURBAN & BURKHA BECAUSE IT UPSETS ME, IF YOU AGREE POST THIS AS YOUR STATUS . ND IM NT BEING RACIST

No, your not being racist, you are being a moron.  Subtle difference here.

If you want to see home many people subscribe to this belief, have a look here http://youropenbook.org/?q=%22not+racist%22&gender=any

Now,  I don’t know why people are so ready to believe that the police A) have the power or B) have the time to act as some sort of fashion police and C) what would they do if you said no?  arrest you for not chaining your clothes when asked by a police officer?  I am not a trained lawyer, but I would bet that such legislation has never been passed.

In fact, I heard only this morning that someone was arrested at the World Turned Upside Down pub on Basingstoke road for wearing a England shirt.  This rumor was automatically believed by some and I don’t understand why.

Why are people so ready to believe that we are in some sort of police state?  What else to they think the police have the power to do?  Why dose anyone think that all this stuff offends immigrants.  I will be willing to bet that no immigrant has ever been offended by the George Cross, the Union Flag, Christmas lights, black pudding or cups of tea.

My real question is, Why don’t people THINK before just gobbling up this crap wholesale.

Sigh.

Pavement Cyclists #rdg

I used to cycle on the pavement when I first started cycling (this is as an adult) but I soon move don to the roads as soon as I was comfortable with it (I do not drive, so I had to acquire road sense first).

I found the roads highly hostile to cyclists, until one day I got hit by a car and said “sod this”.  Got rid of my bike, now that avenue of transport is closed to me.

However, because I believe the roads are dangerous, this does not mean that I can pass that risk on to pedestrians.   While I am sure that I can cycle without hitting anyone, it would not surprise me if the person who hit me with their car would say the same thing.

Anyone who has walked down the Oxford road will know just how dangerous it is.  For instance, the No 17 bus stop out side games workshop by the Butts.   There is normally large crowds and only a one person wide gap between the crowd and the shop fronts.  This gap is constantly shot through by people on pushbikes.

I believe there are two types of people on bikes.  Those that wear helmets, have lights, don’t text and ride at the same time, have their bikes in a suitable configuration and *ride on the roads*.  These people are cyclists.

Then there are those who typically have their saddles down as low as they will go, heels on the peddles, toes pointing outwards getting frustrated that the pavements are (shock) full of pedestrians.  This second group are not cyclists, these are pedestrians on bikes and are a danger to all.
